한국에서 대학 교복이 사라진 이유
Why did University Uniform disappear in Korea?

오늘날의 대학생에게 '대학 교복'은 생소한 단어다. 한편 해방 후 80년대 초반까지 대학 교복은 공식적으로 존재했다.

그러나 교육 당국이 줄곧 대학생들에게 교복 착용을 지시해왔음에도 실제로 학생들이 일괄적으로 교복을 입는 일은

없었으며, 60년대 이후 교복 입은 대학생은 찾아보기 힘들어졌고 80년대 중반에는 완전히 자취를 감추었다.   
대학 교복은 어떠한 이유로 사라지게 되었을까? 이 연구에서는 당국의 교복 착용 지시에 맞선 대학생들의 꾸준한 저항을

그 이유로 보고 있다. 대학생들은 교복을 교육 당국의 학생 통제 수단으로 여겼고, 일제 강점기 교복을 계승한 디자인에

반발했으며, 대학생에 대한 사회적 인식이 나빠지면서 대학생 신분을 드러내는 것에 부담을 느껴 교복 착용을

거부했던 것으로 추론된다.
이 연구는 거의 다뤄진 적이 없는 한국 대학 교복이라는 주제에 대한 기초 자료를 모으고 이 주제에 대해 어떤 질문을

제기할 수 있을지 가늠해보는 시도이다. 앞으로 이 주제에 대한 더 많은 연구가 이루어져 대학 교복이 존재하던 시대와 전혀 다른 대학 문화를 보유한 현대 한국 사회에 더욱 유익한 질문을 던지고 흥미로운 시각을 제시할 수 있게 되길 기대한다.

It might be difficult for current university students in Korea to imagine what it was like when there was 'university uniform' in this country more than 30 years ago. At that time, university students were in confrontation with educational authorities over uniform issue. Students refused to wear a school uniform for mainly three reasons: First, they thought that school uniform could repress the freedom of expression and individuality. Second, they considered its militaristic design as a vestige of the Japanese colonialism. Third, they were unwilling to expose their position as a university student by wearing a school uniform as there was negative perception of university students prevailing in societies.
University uniform history has been scarcely explored until the present. Therefore, this research aims to be groundwork for further profound researches on this issue. Constant questions and interdisciplinary approaches are needed in order to advance the university uniform history in light of current Korean society, which has totally contrasting culture in terms of uniform. This research may raise interesting discussions and create new perspectives when it comes to university uniform.
